To whom that hadn't seen... The very first photos of Hale-Bopp Comet taken in São Paulo State, Brazil.

See here the Hale-Bopp Comet photos taken in Ibiuna city (50 km far from São Paulo city) at April 19, 1997. The photos were made between 18h20 and 18h35.

Observe that, due to the long time exposure, the comet and the stars are undefined, like small lines. That day, despite the comet was still a bit over the horizon line, it was possible to see it without the help of other devices (binoculars, telescope etc). Its magnitud was similar to the few visible stars in São Paulo city (in very clear nights...).

Technical data

The equipment utilized was a Nikon camera, model F301, with 50 mm (normal) lenses , aperturef/1.8, using Fujichrome Provia ISO 400 slide. Exposure time was 1 min 30 s with aperture f/2.8. Another photo with longer exposure time (3 min) didn’t present better results, even with powerful lenses like 500 mm, because they are not luminous (maximun aperture f/8).

This photo was taken at 18h44. Note that the comet is already sligthly displaced to the left, in comparison to the former photos. Its luminosity (magnitud) was still large, but its tail was not so luminous. See details following.

All photos in this day (May 1st, 1997) were made with Fujichrome Provia ISO 400, with development process altered to ISO 600 in the Fuji Professional Laboratory, in São Paulo - Brazil.
